It’s the weekend of Maine Maple Sunday! So we ventured out early in the weekend on Saturday while we had company in town. It was fun! We went not too far down the road to Balsam Ridge, a Christmas tree farm with a heaping side of maple syrup! Shop local!
Balsam Ridge began as a Christmas tree farm. The owners, Sharon and Dewey decided to add in maple syrup to promote the tree farm. However, I think it’s become quite the attraction on its own! When we pulled up today there were people taking pictures with their sign on the side of Egypt Rd.
The owners were quite knowledgeable and eager to share their process. I learned that it takes 55.5 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup. However, with a reverse osmosis water system it only takes 8 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup! They use the R.O. system to bring the sugar content up to 10% from a general 1.5%. That’s nifty!
Depending upon the temperature on the day the sap is harvested, it will affect the color and grade. Umm side note, #babaiesarecute #raspberriesforsmiles
There were plenty of maple products to choose, from plain ol’ syrup to dry bean mixes with syrup for a baked flavor!
They were also handing out free samples of ice cream with fresh syrup over the top! Delish, and dare I say far better than any store bought condiment.
Our daughter was a little jealous of her big brother because he got his very own sample cup of ice cream and syrup. Haha. Someday soon little girl; you’ll have your own.
ERMEHGERD! Maple coated nuts. They had more than one kind, too!
I would highly recommend Balsam Ridge in Raymond, Maine for anyone looking to experience maple syrup making in Maine! They were super family friendly, and tomorrow on Sunday they’ve got a few acts to add.
